Atlanta’s first Life Plan community
In 1965, Lyndon Johnson was president, man had yet to step foot on the moon (but we were working on it), The Sound of Music premiered in New York City, St. Louis’s Gateway Arch was completed, and Canterbury Court opened its doors as the very first Life Plan community in the growing city of Atlanta, Georgia.
From the very start, the vision for the community was to be a welcoming place where seniors could live an interesting and fulfilling life together, with a continuum of care in place that would meet future care needs. This vision was first championed by Frank Player of Atlanta’s All Saints’ Episcopal Church and Margaret Hancock of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Initially known as the All Saints – St. Luke’s Home for the Retired, Canterbury Court has enjoyed steady and significant growth in the decades since our founding. In addition to the Club Tower that was part of the original campus, the Peachtree Tower opened in 1991, the Vermont Tower opened in 2005, and in 2023 our community experienced its largest expansion yet with the additions of the new Garden Tower and Monarch Pavilion, the latter being home to our refreshed healthcare neighborhoods that include the following:
Today, six decades since our humble beginnings, Canterbury Court continues to be a leader in senior living in Atlanta, Georgia. We believe deeply in our core mission to be a place where seniors come together to live wonderful lives in a beautiful, welcoming community. Canterbury Court has changed—it has grown and improved in so many ways—but our mission remains consistent.
