Beating the Winter Blues: Resident Panel Discussion | January 21

Stroll of Support

On November 1st Canterbury Court hosted our first annual “Stroll of Support” to end Alzheimer’s. We gathered the day before the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association held their Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Brave’s stadium. Residents, family members, and staff came together to walk through the Canterbury gardens and out along the sidewalk to show support, raise funds, and broadcast our ongoing commitment to ending Alzheimer’s disease. It was clear that as a community that supports those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, this was a cause very close to all of our hearts.

The “Stroll” kicked off with words from Kim Franklin, Sr. Manager, Programs & Services at the Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter. Kim was able to share with us the important work the Alzheimer’s Association is doing to advance research in the field of memory loss. This work could not be accomplished without the continued financial support of communities like ours. She noted that Canterbury Court’s “Stroll of Support” was a great way to make the Walk to End Alzheimer’s accessible to more members of our community.  As staff organizers, we were overwhelmed by the turnout and amount raised for the Alzheimer’s Association. Over 50 people came to stroll, and we raised more than $2,000. Our fundraising page on the Alzheimer’s Association website will remain active through the end of the year for those who would still like to make a donation.

The “Stroll” at Canterbury utilized three paths, all starting in Monarch Pavilion. The first meandered through our beloved garden, while the second had participants strolling in front of the building, right along Peachtree.  While walking we made noise and waved purple flags for all to see, as a public display of our support to end Alzheimer’s. Our third and final path walked the halls of Canterbury with joy and excitement. The purple balloon banner marked the finish line at the Vermont Community Room where participants were able to gather together to enjoy snacks, live music, and camaraderie.

We want to thank everyone who came out to stroll, showed their support, bought a T-shirt, made a donation, and helped make this day possible. We look forward to hosting our second annual Stroll of Support next year. We hope to have even more participation and make a larger impact with our fundraising!  It is clear that when the Canterbury community feels passionate about a cause we show up, step up, and stroll!
